Daf-A-Week
Learn It - Review It - Own It
As its name implies, Daf-A-Week is a program to proceed through Shas learning one daf of Gemara a week. Begun at the onset of the twelfth Daf Yomi cycle, Daf-A-Week's goal is to provide learners ample time to grasp the subtleties and complexities of even the most difficult sugyos, and to do significant review.

My Dream - Daf-A-Week, A Daf Yomi Alternative

I have a Torah dream. I want to suggest a daily learning program that I believe can have a tremendous benefit for the Torah community. The program is modeled after Daf Yomi, but the pace is a Daf a week instead of a Daf a day. The trade off for the slower pace is that the schedule includes review and allows more time to delve into the sugyos more thoroughly. I want to stress that this is a daily learning program. The slower pace does not mean less learning. My dream is to popularize Daf-A-Week. Below I will detail a suggested weekly schedule.

Please pardon my chutzpah for promoting this program. When Daf Yomi was started, a Godol B'Yisroel started it. Although I may be out of place getting on this soapbox, I see that the people who have been following the Daf-A-Week schedule, have had much satisfaction from their learning. I want to share my thoughts and present the benefits for others to consider.

Klal Yisroel has seen great growth in Torah learning emanating from the dream that Rav Meir Shapiro, zt"l, had in the 1920s when he established the Daf Yomi program. The Kiddush Hashem of the worldwide celebration of the last Siyum HaShas is still fresh in my mind.

Following the Daf Yomi regimen has many benefits. Among them are:

  • Assures that a day will not go by without Torah learning
  • A structured and steady way of going through Shas with clearly defined goals
  • A unifying project that connects Klal Yisroel. The synergy of everyone learning the same Gemara gives chizuk to all involved
  • Shiurim around the world almost guarantee that someone traveling will be able to find a Daf Yomi Shiur
Daf Yomi has had a positive effect on thousands of people. I salute all those who are benefiting from it and encourage others to join. However, Daf Yomi is not for everyone. For many, the quick pace does not give adequate time to develop the richness of the sugyos and does not leave enough time for sufficient review. For these people, there are two main reactions. Some abandon Daf Yomi altogether and lose out on its many benefits. Others stick with the Daf. They are rightfully proud of their efforts and dedication, but are frustrated with their end results. They don't feel that they retain what they have learned and come away feeling inadequate.

Daf-A-Week shares many of the benefits of Daf Yomi. Its consistent pace assures the steady completion of perokim and mesechtos. Iy"H, as its popularity grows, it will gain the chizuk of being a Klal Yisroel project. However, Daf-A-Week's slower pace lends itself to a style of learning which I believe many will enjoy. There is a tremendous sense of accomplishment as the Daf blossoms throughout the week.

I do not view this as a break from Daf Yomi, but rather as an extension of it. The schedule was purposely set to be from Wednesday to Tuesday rather than the more natural Sunday to Shabbos in order to be in sync with the Daf Yomi. Daf-A-Week began Wednesday, Adar A 21, 5765 / March 2, 2005 together with Daf Yomi's twelfth cycle and its first cycle will iy"H conclude together with Daf Yomi's eighteenth cycle. In my dream, Daf Yomi and Daf-A-Week morning shiurim will share the same pot of coffee.

Over the last few months I have spoken about Daf-A-Week with many people. I received encouragement and interest from Gedolim, Rabbonim and baal habatim.

Iy"H on Wednesday, Iyar 19, 5766 / May 17, 2006, we will be starting Gemara Shabbos. I would like to suggest to anyone interested in joining, to come aboard or, as I affectionately refer to it, become a Daf Weekling. I encourage groups to form Shiurim or Chaburahs. Rabbonim, encourage your congregation. Congregations, speak with your Rabbonim. Please register your shiur so that we can match people looking for Daf-A-Week shiurim to a shiur in their area. To register a shiur, get Daf-A-Week schedules, submit questions or comments, please contact me at 973-614-0275 or info@dafaweek.com.

Below is a sample schedule. Every group or individual would obviously have to tailor it to their own needs.
